Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
